PRETTY LITTLE THINGS
To the young millennial, lingerie is not merely underwear; it is a sartorial way of life. Take Kendall Jenner, who teams her lace bralet with a bomber jacket and faded mom jeans. Or Alexa Chung, in a lace-trimmed slip dress worn with Converse to a Californian BBQ. Then there’s Gigi Hadid, stepping out in a cashmere tracksuit, whilst younger sister, Bella, favours a retro-fabulous logo shell suit, worn with a temple-pinchingly tight Croydon facelift ponytail.
There’s no doubt about it, the contemporary lingerie market is booming: with the sleepover aesthetic no longer just for little kids; and loungewear far from a trend relegated solely to the sofa.
So, who are the new kids on the block? Firstly, there’s DKNY and Desmond & Dempsey, new and exclusive to Brown Thomas. Botanical prints like the wallpaper in East London’s hippest spots, jostle with a modern take on the ‘house coat’. For a slighty more upscale take on the pyjama, there’s Diane Houston by Gilda and Pearl, which the Gen Z-er will rightfully pair with some dad trainers and an army jacket for the ultimate street-style-approved mash-up.
Feeling - as many of us are, come Christmas - a little more lo-fi? How about some supremely snuggly Uggs, to be worn with a pair of Spanx leather-effect leggings (a new move for the brand), or some iconic logo underwear and loungewear from DKNY and Calvin Klein (Bella would approve.) Double-drop or mix your logos, for ultimate 90s points. For the slinky-inclined who like their lingerie worn as, well, actual lingerie, there’s Dutch brand Love Stories - an Instagram favourite for its well-priced lacy triangle bras and animal print separates.
All, if I do say so myself, provide the perfect partner for a Christmas brunch of smoked salmon and Bucks Fizz. And if you want to stay in them all day, well…. you’ll get no judgment from me.
